Soil Sampling in Sellafield, West Cumbria
Towards the end of August this year Eco Prospects worked with a client based in Sellafield, West Cumbria. As you can see from some of the photographs the land was located next to the Sellafield Power Station. We were involved with assessing and evaluating the condition of the soil in the fields owned and managed by our client.
It is essential that farmers and landowners understand the condition of their soil. Why? Because healthy soil supports amongst other things, food production and increased biodiversity. Conversely, poor soil management and inappropriate land use can cause soil degradation which limits the ability of the soil to perform vital functions.
Going forward, farmers and land managers will be paid for looking after soil health and taking basic measures to protect and nurture their soils. It will cover arable soils for crop cultivation as well as grassland, moorland and other soils. That’s another reason to care for the health of the soil and the first step is to assess its condition.
